Eighteenth-Century Fiction, a McMaster University journal

25 notes

Since Eighteenth-Century Fiction journal covers the long eighteenth century (1660-1820[ish]) and cultural studies, we can talk about pirates once in a while. Although the “Golden Age of Piracy” was definitely over by the mid-eighteenth century, wars still raged around the world and privateering occupied many sailors (claiming prizes in the name of their host-country). This image shows Ann Mills, reputed to be a ruthless fighter and a skilled sailor; despite her prowess, she had to dress like a man to be accepted in the maritime life.
